Portola is the only incorporated city in eastern Plumas County and is home to the wide variety of public services one expects to find in a small city: hospital, schools, parks, library, churches, airport, post office, service organizations and commercial businesses including grocery stores, hardware store, auto parts store, pharmacy, gas station, restaurants, beauty salon, etc.
This historic family-oriented town was originally built in 1910 by the Western Pacific Railroad, and offers a wide variety of housing stock including affordable first-time homes, manufactured homes and custom-built homes. Properties in town are a fairly typical lot and block layout while properties on the outskirts of town have a more rural, country feel. Two natural phenomena anchor the town: the middle fork of the Feather River, which runs through the center of town, and the towering Beckwourth Peak on the south end of town.
With the Sierra Nevada range to the west and the expansive Sierra Valley to the east, Portola enjoys some of the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets in the area. In addition to the many conveniences of city life, Portola is also surrounded by national forest for easy access to the outdoors.
Portola is also the gateway to beautiful Lake Davis, paradise for anglers, kayakers, campers and day use visitors alike. The irregular shoreline with its many small to large peninsulas creates miles and miles of lake frontage to test your skills with the fish, have a family picnic or camp for the weekend. A new non-paved bike path circles the lake, allowing enjoyment for cyclists of all skill levels.
Portola lies 10 miles east of Graeagle and is conveniently situated on both the north and south sides of highway 70, just 50 miles from downtown Reno, NV. Many in the community commute to Reno for work and to take advantage of the additional retail opportunities Reno offers.
